STAY COOL

Urban heat islands, cool roofing, and the impact on people

Coil coating producers in the U.S. have been supplying “cool roof” coatings for over two decades. These coatings are specifically designed to reflect the sun’s rays back into the atmosphere rather than absorbing them like many typical roofing materials. The theory goes that, by doing this, cool roofs help keep buildings cooler, lessen the reliance on air conditioning, and improve energy efficiency and overall quality of life for building inhabitants. Research backs up these claims.

There is even evidence that cool roofs can improve quality of life for a city’s entire population. The urban heat island effect is named for the higher temperatures experienced in cities due to their concentrations of man-made surfaces such as buildings, sidewalks, and streets. It is especially vexing during the summer, and economically disadvantaged communities often bear the brunt.

Many of us retreat inside our nice, cool homes during a brutal heat spell, but many others have no means to do so. You might think the urban heat islands are found exclusively in southern cities of the U.S., but any metropolis where buildings, parking lots, and streets have replaced grass and trees experiences this heating effect.

The Heat is Coming: Be Cool with Cool Roofs

In late March, the Sun crosses the equator and begins to move into the Northern Hemisphere. (We know that the Sun is stationary and Earth is moving, but it is easier to think about it the other way around.) Temperatures rise, perennials bloom, and we’re glad that winter is over. It’s a great time of year. The heavy coats go back into the closet and everyone’s attitude brightens. But we all know those warmer spring temperatures will eventually turn downright hot in summer. Some say it’s getting even hotter due to global warming. A prepainted product is on the market that can help mitigate environmental concerns raised by increasing temperatures. It’s called cool roofing and it continues to rise in popularity.

Four Reasons to Consider Metal Roofs

Over the past few years, we have seen a significant increase in the use of metal roofs in the residential sector. In fact, the Metal Roofing Alliance estimates that more than 750,000 U.S. homeowners chose a metal roof to protect their families in 2015. According to their survey, the Metal Roofing Alliance identified eight reasons homeowners are making the switch to metal roofs. Here is a breakdown of the four most popular reasons people are using metal roofs to protect their homes.

1. Metal roofs have longevity.

Depending on the material, metal roofs can last anywhere between 40 and 70 years. That’s a significant increase when compared to the life expectancy of a traditional asphalt roof, which may only last between 12 and 20 years.

2. Metal roofs are durable and offer strong protection. Continue reading

The Growing Popularity of Metal Roofing in the Residential Market

The Metal Roofing Alliance estimates that more than 750,000 U.S. homeowners chose a metal roof to protect their families in 2015. The Metal Roofing Alliance reports that demand for sustainable, eco-friendly and energy-efficient home improvement materials continue to grow in North America.

According to a new study conducted by Dodge Data & Analytics, the residential metal roofing industry saw a big jump in market share last year, moving from approximately 8 percent in 2014, to 11 percent in 2015. The independent survey showed that between 2014 and 2015, the total demand for metal roofing increased from 11.7 million squares to 17.7 million squares. This is the second time residential metal roofing has achieved double-digit market share in the re-roofing segment. Metal roofing is second only to asphalt shingle roofing in the remodeling market. Asphalt market share dropped 2 points overall, and it now makes up 78 percent of the U.S. market.

When the Metal Roofing Alliance began its national consumer awareness campaign in 1998, metal only made up 3.7 percent of the re-roofing market. The organization’s consistent effort to educate consumers about investment-grade metal roofing has helped to build this market.

Cool Roofing: What’s New

We are now a few decades into the era of cool metal roofing. “Era” is probably the wrong word, because cool metal roofing is here to stay. Many coatings producers and metal roofing manufacturers in North America now offer the benefit of cool roofing as a part of their standard product portfolio.

As “special” becomes “standard,” it is easy to assume that cool roofing is on autopilot and that nothing more needs to be done. Although in a practical sense this is mostly true, it is good to remember that research continues wherever energy savings is the goal, and cool roofing is included in this research.

Consider the following: Continue reading
